In-House Leadership Workshops

Archetype Leadership + Teams runs in-house leadership workshops for managers and leaders at workplaces across New Zealand, including Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Hamilton.

Workshops run from a half-day to two days and are tailored to your organisation before we start. Each focuses on one area of leadership, such as feedback, accountability or coaching skills.

A workshop is often the easiest way to begin developing your leaders. It builds a specific skill, and you can see the difference it makes before deciding whether to do more.

Recent clients include Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Starship Hospital, the Ministry of Education and Chapman Tripp.

How our workshops work

Our in-house leadership development workshops are tailored to suit your needs.

  • Only your people. We run workshops for one organisation at a time, so we can tailor them to your needs and people can talk openly about real situations.

  • Tailored first. We talk with you before the workshop and adapt the structure, content and examples to your organisation.

  • Practical. Leaders practise with situations they actually face, and each person leaves with goals and habits to work on.

  • Flexible. A half-day, a full day, two days, as a one-off or a series.

Workshop topics

An in-house leadership development workshop is extremely flexible. As well as flexible duration and timing the content is flexible - the topics included are tailored to suit your needs.

Once we understand the needs of your leaders we will prepare a draft content plan for you to consider.

Here are the most common leadership workshop topics …

Leadership essentials for new leaders

What leadership is, the difference between managing and leading, positional authority versus influence, and how to run good one-to-ones. Suits team leaders, new managers and emerging leaders.

Managing versus Leading

People are usually promoted because they are good at a job which leads them to manage rather than lead. Understand the differences and when to use each.

Leadership Styles

What leadership styles are common in New Zealand, their pros and cons, and when they should be used. For each leader, what styles do they tend to use and what style/s could they develop?

Feedback that improves performance

How to give reinforcing and redirective feedback that is clear, specific and useful, and how to use CPR (content, pattern, relationship) feedback when the same problem keeps coming back.

How effective leaders give feedback

Accountability conversations

Clear, calm, direct conversations about performance and commitments, practised on live examples, and the "above the line" behaviour that makes accountability part of how a team works.

What is accountability?

Leaders as coaches

What coaching is, how it differs from mentoring, the coaching mindset, three core coaching skills and the TGROW coaching framework, with plenty of practice.

Leaders as coaches workshop

Psychological safety and trust

What psychological safety is, why it matters for performance, and how trust is built and eroded, so people speak up, challenge well and solve problems earlier.

Leading under pressure, with DISC

Each person completes a DISC profile and learns their natural style, what they do more or less of under pressure, and how that affects the people they lead.

DISC Profiles

Delegation

How to delegate so the work gets done by the right person at the right level, without it landing back on your desk.

Leading former peers

For people promoted to lead the team they were part of: resetting relationships, setting expectations early, and being fair without losing goodwill.

Conflict resolution for team leaders

How to notice conflict early, step in when team members clash, and turn disagreement into useful debate instead of letting it fester.

Balancing doing and leading

How new leaders balance their own work with leading their team: what to hand over, what to keep, and how to protect time for their people.

Leading teams

The development journey teams go through, the Five Behaviours of high-performing teams (trust, productive conflict, commitment, accountability and results), and how to create direction and alignment in a team.

Strategy to priorities

Turning strategy into clear team priorities, with the meeting rhythms, decision-making and follow-through that keep a team delivering.

Leading Yourself

Leading others well requires leading yourself well. What this means in practice.

What a workshop costs

Each workshop is quoted up front, including tailoring and preparation and any profiles such as DISC, so you know the full cost before you book.

From a workshop to a programme

Some organisations want to go further after a workshop. A programme links a series of workshops, usually about a month apart, with one-to-one coaching for each leader in between. You can add workshops one at a time.

Who facilitates

Workshops are designed and facilitated by Tony Gardner (Auckland-based) or Emma Holderness (Wellington). Tony is a former CEO and board chair with more than a decade of facilitating and coaching leaders; Emma is a former Chief People Officer and Royal New Zealand Air Force officer.

“Tony provided us with delegation skills workshops for senior members of our firm. The content was perfectly tailored to the audience and delivered by him with infectious energy. Highly recommended.”

— Charles Spillane, CEO, Kensington Swan

Recent in-house workshops include delegation workshops for Endress Hauser, FENZ, partners and senior associates at Kensington Swan, a Leaders as Coaches workshop at CEMIX, Starship Hospital, RedeMont, the Ministry of Education, a DISC profiling workshop for partners and associates at Chapman Tripp, and resilience and wellbeing workshops at MGI+MORE.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a leadership workshop?

Our in-house leadership workshops run from a half-day to two days, depending on the topics and how much practice you want built in. They can be one-off or part of a short series.

How much does an in-house leadership workshop cost in New Zealand?

It depends on the length of the workshop, how much preparation and tailoring is needed, and whether profiles such as DISC are included.

So there are variables but we appreciate having a range of potential cost may help you: a half-day workshop could cost from $2,500 + GST and full-day from $3,900 + GST.

Archetype quotes each workshop up front so you know the exact cost before you book.

What topics can a leadership workshop cover?

Common topics are leadership essentials for new leaders, managing v leading, leadership styles, feedback, accountability conversations, coaching skills, psychological safety and trust, leading under pressure with DISC, delegation, leading teams, leading yourself and turning strategy into priorities.
